Sense of Ownership

I. The situation

In my team, I have great staff members and not so great ones.

Let’s talk a bit about definition about “great” and “not so great” before we continue:

Great: independent in completing a job; able to balance finding own solution with checking with me when faced with issues; take time to think about solution and their potential implication and alternatives, produce clean work (no typos; takes time to ensure that visual is nice); keep track of task to be completed and accomplish them one by one; take the time to accomplish a job.

In a world filled with parallel projects and limited resource, Life Is A Breeze with these guys.

Get yourself a good boss.

Totally.

If you have the option of 3 type of workplace:

1. A place that offers substantial pay compared to other company for fresh grads (it happens right?)

2. A place with good boss, people who are great themselves and really care about making their staff to be as good as them

3. A place that offers some variety in challenge in the task

4. A place that allows you to go home at 17.00 every day

Choose number 2.

Why? Why not the money?

Moving to the higher ground on motivation

Now i like to share a bit about a post that really resonates with me.

(the full post can be found here)

The post talk about 4 different type of motivation, driven by positive or negative motivation and extrinsic or intrinsic factor.

Naturally, the best is positive and intrinsic motivation.

Found a great blog on happiness at work

zen gardenAs a worker and supervisor, i believe in the values of making the workplace as place for personal growth.

Having challenging assignments that gives people the chance to expand their knowledge, push new mind boundaries.

That also means doing these challenging assignments in a positive environment, an environment where personal traits are appreciated, credit are properly given, feedback are given nicely, back-stabbing politics is shunned, and cooperation is promoted.

I have to admit, that sometimes i fail to fulfill this goal, either through deadline pressures, miscommunication, or at times, simply bad leadership on my side. Regardless, i still believe in the workplace as place for self development, and i strive to be better.

So i was very happy when i found this blog about how to improve happiness at work.

Can i tell you about the vetting process?

copy-of-tampian1Dhirosattha ( 12:59:36 AM): can i tell you about the vetting process?

xxxxx ( 12:59:53 AM): yup….

Dhirosattha ( 12:59:58 AM): the vetting process is, in general, a process where people move from number 2 to number 1

Dhirosattha ( 1:00:58 AM): at age 0, 100% human at no.2, at age 18, 50% of human at no.2; at age 23, 5% of human at no.2

Dhirosattha ( 1:00:59 AM): now

Dhirosattha ( 1:01:09 AM): this is where the real vetting process happens

Defining one’s life history and future based on race is just sad

ocean_hopeI see and meet many people who define themselves, their life history, and their life future based on the traits on which they are born. example: i’m african american, i’m indian.

You see, after thinking about it a bit, i found it not ok for someone to define their life history and future based on these traits. Think of white male and an indian male. both are male homo sapiens. both have the same type and number of body parts. Why should anyone from one of those race excuse himself for his life history or life future? Why should anyone use birth as an excuse to not succeeding in life?

I like quotes

Go to my Friendster, my Facebook, they’re littered with quotes.

i love quotes, small punches of insight that pushes me forward.

i found some good ones, and i like to share them with you

I like dreams, dreams are important component of my life, without my dreams, i would never be here

All men dream but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity; but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes to make it possible.”

T.E Lawrence,

Responsibility, time and again i need reminders, that i am responsible for my life, and that i need to take Action in my life

“The best years of your life are the ones in which you decide your problems are your own. You do not blame them on your mother, the ecology, or the president. You realize that you control your own destiny.”

Albert Ellis,

Story of my life

“The question for each man to settle is not what he would do if he had means, time, influence and educational advantages; the question is what he will do with the things he has. The moment a young man ceases to dream or to bemoan his lack of opportunities and resolutely looks his conditions in the face, and resolves to change them, he lays the corner-stone of a solid and honorable success.”
